5 Assumptions That Could Be Holding Back Your Gifting

I hear some version of this pretty often:

“I love what you do, but I don’t think we have the budget for it.”

And I get it.

When you see beautiful Italian leather goods, bespoke belts, silk scarves, custom branding and an entire boutique experience built around an event, it’s easy to assume that luxury corporate gifting automatically means out of budget.

But that's exactly why I always encourage planners to have the conversation before ruling something out.

Because after more than a decade of working with corporate groups, incentive programs and events, I've realized there are a handful of assumptions that come up again and again and they may be limiting what's possible before we've even had a chance to get creative.

So, let's talk about five of them.

1. “We don't have the budget for luxury gifting.”

Let's start with the big one.

Luxury doesn't have to mean spending $500 per person.

Yes, we can absolutely create a high-end VIP gifting experience at that level (and beyond). But we can also work backward from a budget and determine where your dollars will have the greatest impact.

Maybe that's a smaller leather good instead of a larger piece. Maybe it's a beautiful silk scarf. Maybe we simplify the customization or packaging. Maybe the larger investment is reserved for a smaller VIP group.

Getting creative, not only with the design, but also with the execution is our specialty!

I'd much rather you come to me and say, “We have a $150 per person budget. What can we do?” than assume there's nothing we can offer within your budget.

The goal isn't necessarily to spend more. It's to make what you're already spending create the largest impact and return.

2. “We need hundreds of pieces to do something custom.”

Custom doesn't have to mean mass production.

In fact, some of our favorite projects are smaller groups where we can get incredibly intentional about the details.

Think executive retreats. President's Clubs. Top-performer trips. Board gifts. VIP client experiences.

Being a boutique brand gives us flexibility that larger brands and traditional promotional suppliers don't always have. We can explore materials, colors, personalization and details specifically for your group without necessarily requiring thousands, or even hundreds, of pieces.

Sometimes smaller is exactly what makes an experience feel so special.

3. “A great gift has to appeal to everyone.”

When you're gifting a group of 50, 100 or even 500 people, finding one thing that everyone will love can feel nearly impossible.

And honestly? It probably is.

But you don't necessarily have to choose one gift for everyone.

Some of our most successful gifting experiences give guests a choice through our Boteri Boutique. Whether that's selecting their favorite leather accessory, choosing a belt strap and buckle combination, picking a silk scarf or shopping from a curated collection of gifts at a similar value, that choice becomes part of the personalization.

Instead of trying to predict what every person in the room will want, you create an experience that allows them to choose what feels most like them.

And suddenly, you're not trying to find the perfect gift for everyone.

You're giving everyone the opportunity to find the perfect gift for themselves.

4. “A recognizable luxury brand is the safer choice.”

This one is especially common when gifting VIPs.

I understand the instinct. A recognizable luxury logo feels safe. Your guests know the name. They know the perceived value. There's very little explaining required.

But here's the question I always come back to:

If they really wanted it, wouldn't they have already bought it themselves?

And maybe they already did.

There's something incredibly powerful about introducing someone to something they haven't seen before.

A beautifully made belt assembled specifically for them. A leather piece personalized at the event. A silk they selected themselves.

Suddenly, the gift becomes a discovery. And discovery becomes part of the experience.

The goal isn't necessarily for your guest to recognize the name on the box immediately. It's for them to remember where they were, who gave it to them and the experience attached to it.

5. “We already have a preferred gifting vendor.”

Great. Keep them. ☺️

Seriously.

We're not trying to be everything to everyone, and neither should your gifting partners.

Your preferred vendor may be perfect for certain programs, budgets and needs. But there are going to be moments when you're looking for something different, something more custom, more experiential or simply something your guests haven't received before.

That's where having another trusted resource in your back pocket can be incredibly valuable.

Maybe it's a VIP group that deserves a little more attention. Maybe it's an incentive trip where the gifting needs to feel like part of the destination. Maybe you want guests to participate in the experience rather than simply receive another item in their hotel room.

You don't need to replace a great gifting partner to make room for another one.

Sometimes you just need the right partner for the right moment.

Before You Rule It Out...

If there's one thing I'd love planners to take away from this, it's this:

Instead of assuming it won’t work, let's start with the conversation.

Bring us your budget. Your guest count. Your vision.

Tell us what you're trying to accomplish, and let us show you what's possible.

Sometimes an idea won't be the right fit, and I promise we'll be the first to tell you that, too.

But sometimes? There's a much better solution sitting between “we can't afford that” and “let's just do what we did last year.”

And that's usually where the best ideas begin.
